Interior design, like all commercial arts, can be very trend led. This season, the trends are all about colour, retro styles and clean, industrial designs. Keeping up with these trends can be hard, but often all you need to do is find a brand that reflects the aesthetic you want.

Parker Knoll

Parker Knoll sofas come in lovely creamy shades, so adding a few neon throw cushions will nail the ‘neon and neutral’ trend. This trend is huge both in interior design and in fashion, and it’s all about mixing neutral, almost boring colours, with a pop of day glow neon to make an attention stealing colour combination.

Mercedes Benz

Mercedes Benz has launched a line of furniture with Italian furniture manufacturer Formitalia Luxury Group. The pieces are made of aluminium, glass and wood and are designed to be reminiscent of luxury car design. This makes it perfect for the ‘industrial interior’ design trend that focusses on the materials, colours and textures seen in industrial manufacturing. It is more masculine than other trends, but by focussing on comfortable furniture with a strong sense of design, you can make the room less hard.

Stressless

The company launched in 1973, so it’s perfectly suited to the trend for ‘1970s’ furniture. Interiors from the 1970s were focussed on bold colours, like rust red and avocado green, and strong, geometric patterns. You can get this look with Stressless’ Windsor line, which comes in a shade of green that references the greens of the 1970s, whilst remaining up to date.

Calligaris Furniture

‘Monochrome’ is still a big trend, and Calligaris Furniture make several lines that fit perfectly into a monochrome design scheme. The Omnia and Odessey ranges are ideal for a black and white dining room, and the Cosmic line is perfect for a room decorated in shades of stone and grey. Add accents with contrasting colours to keep the room exciting.

Collins & Hayes

Furniture that hearkens back to ‘mid-century modern’ design is really hot right now. Collins & Hayes makes sofas and chairs with strong, clean lines, just like the furniture you’d find in a 1950s bachelor pad. To make it more feminine, you can add some cushions and throws in hot new colours, like a strong turquoise or hot pink.

With that, you should be able to find the best brands to help you capture whichever trends and styles you want for your home, even if those styles change from room to room.

Think back to your own childhood, can you recall anything specific that you loved about your bedroom, a friend’s room, playroom or perhaps a classroom? There are often things that stay with us throughout life, but we fail to use as guides when decorating, and designing our own kid’s rooms. These memories be of colours, soft furnishings, or even grand murals, but are all of importance to us.

That is why I recommend parents make a list of the things they adored as children when setting up a child’s space. Until children have formed their own likes and dislikes it is up to you to inspire and comfort them. For me, I was fascinated by a huge painting of a tree on the wall of my first classroom. Whoever thought it up was definitely in touch with their inner child. There were animals peeking out from every branch, and the trunk had a large curio placed in front of it, and painted to look like bark also. That is where the art supplies were kept, and those are like visual candy for a youngster. So, prior to the arrival of our first child, I did my best to replicate that image. And while I meant for it to be a wonderful environment for the baby, it turned out to be a joyful reminder of my past, and a wonderful part of my present and the memories being made now.

Not everyone has the space in their garden for a full fledged walk in shed. This means that storage can be mighty tricky. Here’s one way to handle this issue with aplomb. In fact it is a bit of double dipping, as you also end up bringing some additional decoration to the space. Now, I should mention, this is not best suited for storing the items you need to access on a really regular basis, but works super for those you need infrequently.

Find some beautiful large planters, or containers. There are so many variations these days, don’t be surprised if you have a little bit of trouble picking some out. But, that’s a good thing to have such a wide range to organise, and further beautify your garden. Obviously, this works best if you know prior to purchase what things you will want to conceal in the pots. For example, if there will be smaller items, like hand tools, then you could go with a trough style. Yet, if you are housing the remnants of a bag of potting soil, or mulch then you could use a higher container.

Knowing the intended use for the storage will enable you to pick out containers that compliment your garden design. Also, if you identify in advance that you have a few things or many things to hide then you can buy several planters at once, and thus be certain they match if that is what you want.

You can’t have a stylish garden without putting the effort needed to maintain it. No matter how many decorative statues, wind chimes, or even follies, if they are covered by branches, or overgrown by weeds, they can’t play their part. And yes, some garden decorations are intentionally meant to be partially concealed, I can’t imagine why anyone would want a completely covered birdbath or bench. I mean really what would be the point, just lazy and wasteful is all I can come up with.

Thus, as Spring approaches so does the time for a thorough garden clean up. A list of chores should be of use, as will a sensible approach. To get ready, and to do this right a wheelbarrow, and a a bucket will play an essential role. Put all of the biodegradable matter that you collect into the wheelbarrow. Hang the bucket (a heavy duty one) over one of the sides of the wheelbarrow and put the other garbage in it. Then you will have the branches, and cuttings to place on the compost heap, and the things like broken plastic pots, and labels can be sent to the bin.

All of your necessary chores, and steps will be effectively structured. It will make a big difference in the amount of time the clean up will take overall. And who doesn’t like to take measures to make work simpler, and smarter?

For many, gone are the days of china cabinets. Whether you have down sized in retirement, live in a home too small for such luxuries as specialty cabinets, or see them as a thing of the past, plenty of people go without. But, that does not mean that we don’t have china that is expensive, and or has a sentimental quality about it.

So how do you protect it without having an entire cabinet allocated to those serving plates, gravy boats, cups and saucers and plates? After using them, insert one of the following in between to create a nest for cups and a barrier between plates. These all work particularly well, and are worth the minor investment. These can be used for years without needing to be replaced, and if you break down the cost over those years, the expense is even more reasonable.

Put either a felt round, paper plate or basket coffee filter between your pieces of china. They will help keep them from scratches, cracks and nicks. Evaluate the proper size for those supplies prior to setting out to buy them, as they will only do what you want if they are a suitable size.

If you are both interested in designing an inviting living room, and selecting furnishings that will go the distance then this one’s for you. First look into luxurious corner sofas in neutral shades. As the way they hug sharp angles of a room, and allow so many more people to sit intimately than any other couch make it sublime. By sticking to the white, brown and black tones you can be confident that they will remain fashionable into the foreseeable future.

Next, add several additional pillows that reflect your style and the flavour you want to establish in the space. This is where you can be expressive and carefree about selections. For, attractive throw pillows can be found for unbelievably reasonable prices, and thus replaced as often as you see fit, or the urge wills you. Get trendy, get crazy, get as funky as you want, the sensible couch will anchor it all.

Should you be wanting further ideas on this subject, you will have no lack of materials to choose from. This is a popular concept for good reason. You can achieve sophistication, comfort and longevity should you chose to follow it effectively. And if you get off track and the pillows don’t float your boat, no worries the beauty of it all is you are not married to them. And don’t be too hard on yourself, after all you hit the mark with the all forgiving corner sofa that you so shrewdly chose.

As families expand in size, so too must the family home. This often brings about the question of whether considering brand new homes or older ones that can be refurbished is the route to follow. Undoubtedly there are pros and cons for both, but it is critical to identify what is best for your brood should it be expecting a new addition, or even multiple.

Now, if you put pen to paper and list those benefits and negatives you will be off to a promising start. I should know because every large decision I have ever been faced with, and asked my dad for advice on he has said the exact same thing. Pull out a sheet of paper and write out the pros and cons. I have found that it is indeed a great way to get a handle on the choice being faced. However, in some situations it is enough, and in others additional work is required.

And when it comes to the purchase of a larger home, in all honesty you have to do more than think on it. So, write up that list, and identify whether the needs of a family of three, four, five, or more if that’s what you are planning on actually are, and what is just the icing on the cake. You will surely balance what maintenance may be required, and what long term profit could be expected. Unfortunately, you can expect that it will not be as cut and dry as you might hope it could be. As there will be a lot to take into consideration, including personal preferences, and all those things associated with location.

Then, after your done with the list, get out there and look at a variety off homes before you get dead set on anything in particular. What you are sure to find is that your all important list is revised after having seen some options up close and personal. Once it has been wittled down, it is the list that will show you what logically would be the wisest choice. But as I mentioned before, there is always emotion involved, and that can sometimes trump everything, which means out with the list altogether.

No matter, hopefully it all turns out the way it should. And the next time you have to go through this exercise you will be looking at luxury new homes to retire in. My guess is that by the time you are doing this you will be very conscious of what to buy, as it will be based entirely upon you, and your golden years.

I can’t begin to tell you how many times early on I lived in apartments that were not completely decorated. At that time I was a young barrister, with a lot of debt, and no time to look for bedroom furniture, or any other furniture that was missing in these places. The worst part wasn’t that I didn’t have a bedside table to rest a lamp and my law books, but something less technical and more emotional. None of these places ever felt like a home.

When I would visit my parents house, or friends who had committed to fully furnishing their abodes I could feel a peace. Altogether they had that one, very important thing in common. And when I returned to my expensive, incomplete residence I longed for the sense of home. I yearned for a coffee table to rest my feet, and decorate with personal bits and bobs.

However, like many single young professionals, my job never felt locked in. Maybe it was because I had an absolute jerk of an alpha male for a boss, who reminded all of the associates in the firm that they were dispensable, easily and readily dispensable. So, in the evenings after a long day of depositions, and courtroom hearings I would slump into my ill furnished rental and feel that there must be a better way to live.

As I endured those first few years, I learned a great deal both about the law and myself. Regarding the law, I learned that you should save your pennies just in case the boss loses a big case and needs to fire someone to cushion the blow to his ego. And regarding one’s living space, while you do not need to spend a bundle doing it, not having all of the basic furniture will prohibit it from ever feeling like a home.

Luckily I only spent a handful of years going without. Since, I have invested in sofa beds and dressing tables, along with tables and chairs. With those items I have been able to design a place to not only call home, but a place that feels like home. I would never ever consider living the other way again, because it wasn’t truly living, it was existing. Oh, and I also learned, no matter what the salary, it is not worth working with a mean boss. Life is way too short.

The garden is not a place too often ventured into during the winter months, but depending on where the entrance to your home is, it may still be an area travelled through. As such, you should consider dressing it up in one way or another for the holiday season, particularly if you will have guests traipsing through on the way to your house.

If you do not already have and edging lining the pathway up to your door, then you will need to insert some to complete this look. Select some with a decorative appeal and trace that design with strings of holiday lights and attach with tape. We attached ours with black electrical tape so that it would not show, and would recommend that if you are purchasing lights too, get the cord in black also. This will draw attention up to your house, and your gorgeous holiday wreath that greets your invitees to enter.

In the anticipation of the kids having time off for the holidays ahead, I am collecting ideas for craft projects they would enjoy. I find that they get enough art projects that revolve around the holiday season given to them at school, so I prefer to give them less season ones to occupy their time at home. I find it also takes the attention away from conversations about gifts, which already seems to be a constant in the house.

Our first activity will be to paint tennis shoes, aka sneakers. I will invite over a few of my children’s friends to participate, so I had to get their sizes from their parents. I decided upon high tops for the boys and girls, as I did this with my own high-tops some twenty plus years ago.

Aside from the shoes, all you need is to lie out some newspaper and to collect fabric paints and/or paint pens. I also take out the masking tape so they can create lines, or blocks of colour. I do hope they enjoy the results as much as I did back in the day. Come to think of it, I wish I had thought to buy a pair for myself to decorate.
