For many, gone are the days of china cabinets. Whether you have down sized in retirement, live in a home too small for such luxuries as specialty cabinets, or see them as a thing of the past, plenty of people go without. But, that does not mean that we don’t have china that is expensive, and or has a sentimental quality about it.

So how do you protect it without having an entire cabinet allocated to those serving plates, gravy boats, cups and saucers and plates? After using them, insert one of the following in between to create a nest for cups and a barrier between plates. These all work particularly well, and are worth the minor investment. These can be used for years without needing to be replaced, and if you break down the cost over those years, the expense is even more reasonable.

Put either a felt round, paper plate or basket coffee filter between your pieces of china. They will help keep them from scratches, cracks and nicks. Evaluate the proper size for those supplies prior to setting out to buy them, as they will only do what you want if they are a suitable size.

If you are both interested in designing an inviting living room, and selecting furnishings that will go the distance then this one’s for you. First look into luxurious corner sofas in neutral shades. As the way they hug sharp angles of a room, and allow so many more people to sit intimately than any other couch make it sublime. By sticking to the white, brown and black tones you can be confident that they will remain fashionable into the foreseeable future.

Next, add several additional pillows that reflect your style and the flavour you want to establish in the space. This is where you can be expressive and carefree about selections. For, attractive throw pillows can be found for unbelievably reasonable prices, and thus replaced as often as you see fit, or the urge wills you. Get trendy, get crazy, get as funky as you want, the sensible couch will anchor it all.

Should you be wanting further ideas on this subject, you will have no lack of materials to choose from. This is a popular concept for good reason. You can achieve sophistication, comfort and longevity should you chose to follow it effectively. And if you get off track and the pillows don’t float your boat, no worries the beauty of it all is you are not married to them. And don’t be too hard on yourself, after all you hit the mark with the all forgiving corner sofa that you so shrewdly chose.

As families expand in size, so too must the family home. This often brings about the question of whether considering brand new homes or older ones that can be refurbished is the route to follow. Undoubtedly there are pros and cons for both, but it is critical to identify what is best for your brood should it be expecting a new addition, or even multiple.

Now, if you put pen to paper and list those benefits and negatives you will be off to a promising start. I should know because every large decision I have ever been faced with, and asked my dad for advice on he has said the exact same thing. Pull out a sheet of paper and write out the pros and cons. I have found that it is indeed a great way to get a handle on the choice being faced. However, in some situations it is enough, and in others additional work is required.

And when it comes to the purchase of a larger home, in all honesty you have to do more than think on it. So, write up that list, and identify whether the needs of a family of three, four, five, or more if that’s what you are planning on actually are, and what is just the icing on the cake. You will surely balance what maintenance may be required, and what long term profit could be expected. Unfortunately, you can expect that it will not be as cut and dry as you might hope it could be. As there will be a lot to take into consideration, including personal preferences, and all those things associated with location.

Then, after your done with the list, get out there and look at a variety off homes before you get dead set on anything in particular. What you are sure to find is that your all important list is revised after having seen some options up close and personal. Once it has been wittled down, it is the list that will show you what logically would be the wisest choice. But as I mentioned before, there is always emotion involved, and that can sometimes trump everything, which means out with the list altogether.

No matter, hopefully it all turns out the way it should. And the next time you have to go through this exercise you will be looking at luxury new homes to retire in. My guess is that by the time you are doing this you will be very conscious of what to buy, as it will be based entirely upon you, and your golden years.

I can’t begin to tell you how many times early on I lived in apartments that were not completely decorated. At that time I was a young barrister, with a lot of debt, and no time to look for bedroom furniture, or any other furniture that was missing in these places. The worst part wasn’t that I didn’t have a bedside table to rest a lamp and my law books, but something less technical and more emotional. None of these places ever felt like a home.

When I would visit my parents house, or friends who had committed to fully furnishing their abodes I could feel a peace. Altogether they had that one, very important thing in common. And when I returned to my expensive, incomplete residence I longed for the sense of home. I yearned for a coffee table to rest my feet, and decorate with personal bits and bobs.

However, like many single young professionals, my job never felt locked in. Maybe it was because I had an absolute jerk of an alpha male for a boss, who reminded all of the associates in the firm that they were dispensable, easily and readily dispensable. So, in the evenings after a long day of depositions, and courtroom hearings I would slump into my ill furnished rental and feel that there must be a better way to live.

As I endured those first few years, I learned a great deal both about the law and myself. Regarding the law, I learned that you should save your pennies just in case the boss loses a big case and needs to fire someone to cushion the blow to his ego. And regarding one’s living space, while you do not need to spend a bundle doing it, not having all of the basic furniture will prohibit it from ever feeling like a home.

Luckily I only spent a handful of years going without. Since, I have invested in sofa beds and dressing tables, along with tables and chairs. With those items I have been able to design a place to not only call home, but a place that feels like home. I would never ever consider living the other way again, because it wasn’t truly living, it was existing. Oh, and I also learned, no matter what the salary, it is not worth working with a mean boss. Life is way too short.

The garden is not a place too often ventured into during the winter months, but depending on where the entrance to your home is, it may still be an area travelled through. As such, you should consider dressing it up in one way or another for the holiday season, particularly if you will have guests traipsing through on the way to your house.

If you do not already have and edging lining the pathway up to your door, then you will need to insert some to complete this look. Select some with a decorative appeal and trace that design with strings of holiday lights and attach with tape. We attached ours with black electrical tape so that it would not show, and would recommend that if you are purchasing lights too, get the cord in black also. This will draw attention up to your house, and your gorgeous holiday wreath that greets your invitees to enter.

In the anticipation of the kids having time off for the holidays ahead, I am collecting ideas for craft projects they would enjoy. I find that they get enough art projects that revolve around the holiday season given to them at school, so I prefer to give them less season ones to occupy their time at home. I find it also takes the attention away from conversations about gifts, which already seems to be a constant in the house.

Our first activity will be to paint tennis shoes, aka sneakers. I will invite over a few of my children’s friends to participate, so I had to get their sizes from their parents. I decided upon high tops for the boys and girls, as I did this with my own high-tops some twenty plus years ago.

Aside from the shoes, all you need is to lie out some newspaper and to collect fabric paints and/or paint pens. I also take out the masking tape so they can create lines, or blocks of colour. I do hope they enjoy the results as much as I did back in the day. Come to think of it, I wish I had thought to buy a pair for myself to decorate.

Leather is definitely in at the moment – and I don’t just mean clothes. Leather furniture has been steadily increasing in popularity over the past few years due to the level of comfort and the luxurious appearance that it provides. Leather sofas have been all the rage, but now there is another item of leather furniture on the market fighting for our attention – the leather or faux leather bed. Available in a variety of different shades and finishes, leather looks fantastic in the bedroom when cleverly matched with other furniture and bedding. You may think that they must be terribly expensive, but think again – online retailer www.bedstar.co.uk has a wide range of leather beds at affordable prices. These include singles beds, small doubles and doubles, and even kingsize beds.

So what kinds of leather beds are on offer? Aside from the variety of sizes mentioned above, there are also several different styles of leather bed to choose from. The most recognisable and classic design of leather bed is the simply sleigh bed – the mattress simply sits on top. There are also more traditional bed frames which have utilised leather somewhere in their design. If you’re slightly stuck for space, why not consider a leather bed with built in storage? You can buy a leather bed in the divan style with one or more drawers in the body of the bed, ready to hold any odds and ends you need out of the way.

Faux leather is of course cheaper than genuine leather and Bedstar stock a range of no-leather alternatives should you wish to consider them. These beds offer the same kind of style and are made to just as high a standard as a genuine leather bed, but at a fraction of the cost.

As we begin to prepare for winter, and cosy fires in the fireplace, I am reminded of something. Last year the dog knocked over the fireplace utensil holder and it broke. Ever since they have been laying over the wood basket looking very decorative with sprigs of lavender resting in a bunch across them.

But, this rest and relaxation pose is not meant to last, cold winds will blow on our house, and a fire I will be a fixing. This will be followed by scores of other fires, and the shovel, poker, brush and tongs will be used repeatedly. So, they must find a home that is efficient, but attractive too.

Here is what I have decided upon, I will not invest in a new formal holder, instead I am going to attach coat hooks to the wall next to the fireplace. They are screwed in sideways, and the implements are inserted into the space in between.

This means the dog will be unable to knock them over, and I will not feel compelled to curse under my breath. It also means I will not have to worry about the falling tools scratching the wood floors, or need to pick up any soot. I am quite pleased with this solution to say the least.

Some living rooms do not allow for a traditional furniture layout. At first, things might seem impossible to set up in any configuration that will lend it self to comfort, much less be visually appealing. While there are people who have an eye for sorting such conundrums out, there are always corner sofas for a failsafe solution.

While modular furniture sounds so futuristic, and in my opinion technical, once the word sofa is injected into a discussion about this style of accommodating furniture, all becomes inviting. Though a lot of people tend to think of these couches as items for larger families, and that they take up a great deal of space, this is not the only variation. They come in a great deal of dimensions, and are actually not a new creation. Many homes throughout the last century had variations of this cosy creation.

So, after shaking off any preconceived notions you might have about modular furniture, it will become abundantly clear what an asset it can be to a living space. In fact, a corner unit has often proven to be so inviting, people are known to want to sit on them longer than elsewhere. This is indeed a wonderful reflection upon the integrity of the sofa, but extended stays on it can lead to an increase in spills. So, as it stands the only downside is that you will have very pleased family members and guests, but you might be faced with a need to perfect a stain removal practice.

Selecting flowers to grow in your garden can prove to be difficult if you are new to the task. One way to minimise confusion, clashing, and a displeasing combination of colour stick to a monochromatic grouping. It is always in style, and is virtually fail-safe as long as you are not colour blind. Practical and pretty makes things balanced and beautiful all at once.

The only thing you have to make a decision about is which colour you would like to use in varying shades. Here is an example for someone who had chosen blue as the feature. A sprinkling of larkspur, lavender, and sage make a delightful blend.

Another way to keep things extremely simple is to use the same plant repetitively, but in alternating shades. For example look at marigolds, as they will provide a lovely patchwork pattern of gold, orange and yellow.

However, if you want things safe, but a little more varied, it is always safe to mix things up adding in white flowers. This will help to create depth, and intrigue as the variation of one will make the other pop visually.
